Harvest Haus displays Karice Hollow Tree, Vancouver’s largest Volkfest

From October 5 through 14, 2017, Karice’s hollow tree was on prominent display at Vancouver’s largest Volkfest, Harvest Haus.  A replica of Stanley Park’s famous 700-year-old tree, this installation was perfect for the first-century folklore celebration.

The result of a collaboration between Maurice L. Dery and Stepan Vanicek, this unique masterpiece is made from literally thousands of lineal feet of weld.  Flat strips of aluminum were cut on our OMAX waterjet machining center and then bent and tacked together in ways that seemed impossible.

Measuring 8 feet by 12 feet and 16 feet high (not including the tree branches), the hollow tree took months to build and at times Maurice wondered if he was asking too much of the aluminum.  “Metal just isn’t supposed to do this!” he would say.  In the end, each mating strip matched perfectly and the fabricated creation was identical to the 3D model.

IDS Vancouver is the first event to display our tree

First exhibited at the IDS Vancouver 2016 show, the hollow tree consists of two halves so it can be transported.  In order to install and assemble the tree we had to design and fabricate a separate aluminum tubular substructure.  It attaches to the tree with wheels, is hinged at the top – equipped with cables and a winch – and brings the two halves of the tree together. Watch this VIDEO HERE to see the stunning installation in action.

Exhibited outdoors in the evening at Harvest Haus, we made a roof for the hollow tree to make it waterproof and suspended three Retta lights inside for illumination. It was staged as a bar for the event and the hollow tree display added delight and intrigue to the massive Halle.

Beer is a central focus of Harvest Haus and this year’s festival featured 23 varieties including German, European, and local craft beer. There were also selections of cider, wine, and spirits.

And what would Harvest Haus be without authentic Bavarian food vendors? The two-week festival opened in Bavarian style, honouring the traditions of the Harvest and combined authentic European traditions with modern fare. The festival offered seven sittings—everything from The Stein Games (beer sports competition including Stein Pong) and Lippensynchron Battle (singing competition) to The Duelling Arts (swordplay and competitive axe throwing) and Zany Mode (costume party).

Although there’s no formal dress code, festival attendees were encouraged to don lederhosen or dirndl and drink out of steins.  Thank you to Harvest Haus and The Social Concierge for displaying our hollow tree. We sure had fun at your event!

Ennea Wall Sconce
Ennea Lighting Line – New Lights the Love Child of our Diamond Luxennea and Electron Wall Sconce

Lighting Designers Create a brand new lighting design for the Karice Lighting Line – Introducing our Ennea Wall Sconce and Ennea Pendant.

“Lighting Designers Create” – Maurice L. Dery and Jordan N. Dery collaborate to create our Ennea Lighting series.  New lights created as the Love Child of our Diamond Luxennea and Electron Wall Sconce.

In the fall of 2016, our client from New Market Ontario came to Karice wanting wall sconces to match his newly installed Diamond Luxennea in his foyer.

The lighting designers of Team Karice immediately went to work to design a new lighting fixture.  Using Auto-CAD inventor, 3-D conceptual images were created and presented to the client.  The client loved what he saw, and made a suggestion as to how he would like to see the design changed.  The chamfered edged on the Electron a minimal.  The chamfered edge on the Ennea was made to be the full 1/4″ thickness of the aluminum plate used in the light.  We loved how this created an even greater angular look to the light.

Ennea Wall Scone

Ennea Wall Sconce

The Diamond Luxennea chandelier that was made for our client in New Market used LEDs with a cool lighting temperature.  To develop the Ennea Wall sconce using matching color temperature, research had to be done to obtain a product that would work.  The first LEDs we purchased were scrapped as they created Hot Spots.  Finally, we were able to source a suitable LED that would work for our client.   This of course gave Karice additional flexibility to offer its clients in the future.  The Ennea lighting products are available in both warm and cool color temperatures.

The lighting designers at Karice also took the time to design and develop a Pendant model in the Ennea Series.  Pictured below is a look at the Ennea Tri-Pendant.

The Story behind the SHROOM light

Kalu Interiors approached Karice in April 2016 to help them with their IDS Vancouver Central Bar display. They needed lighting for their display, and came to Karice to design and supply the custom lighting. The theme planned was Alice in Wonderland. We were given the project carte blanche, so this is when the real fun began. Lead designer at Karice, began contemplating the story of Alice, and one night while sitting in the bathtub, design innovations began to populate the mind of our master designer, Maurice L. Dery. The idea of huge mushrooms began to take hold. And so began the journey to create ‘Shroom.

Shroom is an interesting take on a Pendant lighting fixture. Using thin gauge aluminum shapes, the mushroom gills, thirty in all, form the unique shape of our light. Shroom is an LED pendant light fixture that illuminates from both its inner core and a down light. The illumination from within casts a unique play of light onto the aluminum gills. A beautiful array of colors results from the glow of its inner core. The light is also equipped with an MR11 down light. This enables the light to be used for task lighting.

A mushroom shape is not your typical lighting fixture. Travelling on a whimsical theme, the gills of a mushroom heavily influenced our design. Our design began by using Auto-CAD inventor to create the light fixture shape, using the constraints of a 50.8 mm diameter center core. Once the shape was finalized, more detailed drawings were drafted. The aluminum gill shapes were cut on a water jet machining center using thin gauge aluminum sheet material. The details of the top and bottom caps were drafted in Auto-CAD mechanical. CNC programs were written to produce the machining of the top and bottom caps. The caps were designed to enable mounting of the LED’s, the center lighting diffuser, and hold all 30 aluminum gills. Once all of the components were made, the parts were sent out for anodizing. The lights that exhibited at IDS Vancouver in September 2016, were finished in a light gold anodized finish. This color resembles the currently popular brass, only at a more affordable price point.

The light is 596.9 mm diameter and 406.4 mm high. The light is constructed using aluminum, acrylic and energy efficient LED’s. The light is suspended using aircraft cable. A coaxial wire is used for power, thus giving the illusion that the light is floating in mid air.

Tractor Foods custom lighting installation executed by Karice
Tractor Foods Custom Lighting- New Location at the Telus Gardens on Robson Street in Vancouver, BC

Tractor Foods Custom lighting design for their Telus Gardens Restaurant – Dave Wong of WHG and Karice Enterprises collaborate a second time to provide custom lighting for Tractor Foods at their newest location on Robson Street.

Tractor Foods Custom and Innovative Lighting Design for Telus Gardens location

In the spring of 2016 Dave Wong came to Karice with the lighting concept for the Telus Gardens location.

In May 2016, we were presented with initial design concepts for the new location.  The new lighting installation was set over the dining area of the restaurant.  The design consists of intersecting linear lights.  A design theme that was carried through out the rest of the restaurant.  Similar subtle details were replicated in the millwork, unifying the design.  The installation  was crafted by Karice using our in-house, proprietary aluminum lighting extrusion.  Welding the channels together, the lighting installation is 22-feet x 10-feet in size.    Using extra bright LEDs, we were able to provide lighting that would illuminate the entire restaurant.

Suspended Lighting Design for Tractor Foods

When it came to suspending the light in the restaurant, Dave wanted a minimalist approach.  Originally, we had imagined 10 – 11 rigid drop tubes to suspend the light.  Dave wanted only six!   This would mean that the light would cantilever and project out from the drop tubes.  The difficult part of this installation was to figure out, where the six drop tubes would work.  The balance point on the structure had to be figured out, and finalize the locations.  Using large round tubing and large, thick mounting flanges, we were able to meet the strict requirements of Vancouver’s seismic zone codes.

Custom lighting installation for Caffe Artigiano
CAFFE ARTIGIANO – Park Royal, West Vancouver, BC

New Custom lighting installation –  Box Interiors designed a beautiful custom lighting installation for the newly renovated Caffe Artigiano in Park Royal in West Vancouver.  An eight foot diameter lighting ring was the design concept brought to Karice by Box Interior Design.  The end result is spectacular a total eye catching feature to the cafe.  Our Caffe Artigiano project page shows more pictures of this custom lighting installation made for this location.

CUSTOM LIGHTING for Caffe Artigiano in Park Royal – Karice and Box Interior Design collaborate.

Tricia Link of Box Interior Design in Vancouver collaborated with Karice when bringing their lighting design to life for the newly renovated Caffe Artigiano in Park Royal.  The lighting concepts were drawn up by Tricia, and Karice went to work to see how to make the design work.  The concept included an 8ft diameter lighting ring that would suspend nine Rejuvenation Cedar & Moss 14″ pendants.  Faced with the challenge of enabling the lights to be re-lamped was one obstacle that had to be overcome.  Maurice came up with the idea of individual clamping brackets that held the pendant wires into place.  This eliminated the need to store excess wire in the ring that would be needed facilitate the re-lamping process.   Our next challenge was a bigger one.  We had completed our shop drawings, and asked the question, “will the eight foot ring fit through the door?”  Unfortunately the cafe was equipped with only a single door.  This obstacle would make it impossible to fit an eight foot diameter ring through the door.  Back to the drawing board, Karice redesigned the light so that it would come apart in three pieces. Once shop drawings were approved Karice went to work to build the ring.

AutoCAD was used to draft up the shop drawings for this lighting installation.  Pieces were cut on our Omax Water Jet Machining Center.   Using solid sheet aluminum the light was crafted with three layers and three sections.  Each section joins together using overlapping joints and fasteners.  A unique canopy was also built for the project.  A unique clamping mechanism was built into the canopy that would clamp all nine pendant wires to keep them taut once the light was hanging.  This is another service the team a Karice offers.  Always trying to think all possible outcomes that will occur from an installation such as this.

Once the lighting ring was completed a pre-assembly was completed on our mezzanine.  This is one step that we always complete.  Pre-assembly assures that our product will fit in its final home.

Box Interior Design has also posted photos of this project on their website and can be viewed HERE.

Romer's Custom Lighting
ROMER’S BURGER BAR – Port Moody

New Vintage Custom LED lighting design –  Vintage and modern team up to create the new lighting installation at the Romer’s Burger Bar in Port Moody.  Four brand new lighting concepts were brought to life by the team at Karice.  The end result was stunning, adding to the warmth and glow of this new dining location on Morrissey road.  Our ROMERS project page shows more pictures of these custom lights made for this location.

CUSTOM LIGHTING for Romer’s Burger Bar in Port Moody – Karice and CLO Design collaborate.

Robert Clark of CLO Design in Seattle contacted Karice when trying to source lighting for the new ROMERS Burger Bar in Port Moody.  The lighting concepts were drawn up by Robert, and Karice immediately fell in love.  Karice has been working with CLO Design for years, and has always loved what they come up with.  They are innovators in their own right.  To work on this new restaurant location was exciting, and we couldn’t wait to get started.

The look and feel of the restaurant has a vintage appeal.  We loved it.  As you enter into the front door one is greeted by two large starburst style chandeliers.  Each light is equipped with vintage edison style LED bulbs.  The lights are huge at a 5ft diameter globe shape.

In the dining area two large 5ft diameter chandeliers were made.  Each light has (x24) candelabra bulbs.  Feit Electric’s new edison LED Bulbs were perfect for the light.  Feit has done an amazing job on reproducing the warm glow of the incandescent bulbs.

The six booth tables have a steel pendant light that hangs over each location.  The steel shades were made with thin gauge mild steel, and were left with a natural steel finish.  Each shade was coated with a clear epoxy finish to preserve the look.  Each steel pendant is illuminated with a single edison LED bulb.

Upstairs in the Growler room is an inviting space for sitting at the bar.  Three large rings and custom 8-lamp chandeliers were meticulously installed on the ceiling on the mezzanine level.

Tractor Foods Custom Lighting Olympic Village
Tractor Foods – New Location at the Olympic Village in Vancouver, BC

New lighting design for Tractor Foods – Dave Wong of WHG Design and Karice Enterprises collaborate to provide custom lighting for Tractor Foods.

WHG Design and Karice Enterprises – Work Together for a Design Collaboration to provide a new and Innovative Lighting Design for the newest Tractor Foods location on Quebec Street.

In late 2015 Dave Wong of WHG Design and Steve and Meghan Clark, owners of Tractor Foods came to the Karice facility to investigate lighting for their new  location set to open in early 2016.  Karice was able to show everyone, the seamless process that Karice provides to their customers to accomplish the task of a new custom lighting installation.

In January 2016, we were presented with initial design concepts for the new location.  The original design for the location included ten single linear LED lights suspended at differing, angular dimensions.  In the end, Dave changed the design to be a single rectangular fixture that was 28ft x 7ft wide.  Karice was able to use its very own custom aluminum extrusion to create the lighting masterpiece that resides at the Olympic Village location in Vancouver.  Using extra bright LEDs, we were able to provide lighting that would illuminate the entire restaurant.

Custom seismic bracing had to be engineered and desgined to meet the strict requirements of residing in a seismic zone.  The owners of Tractor didn’t want to see aircraft cable bracing, so a system of metal flat bars was developed to accomplish the task.

SHROOMS – Design Lighting for IDS Bar

SHROOMS! – WHAT? Are we crazy?

Kalu Interiors approached Karice in April 2016 to help them with their IDS Vancouver Central Bar Display.  The theme planned was “Alice In Wonderland”.  “What, how can this be?” we told Aleem “we are already there, our display booth is to be a whimsical theme, as we are designing and building the “TREE OF LIGHT”.

Karice was delighted to travel down the rabbit hole with Kalu to design and craft the lights for the Kalu central bar.  We were given the project carte blanche, so this is when the real fun began.  Lead designer at Karice, Maurice Dery, began contemplating the story of Alice In Wonderland.  One night, while sitting in the bathtub, design innovations began to populate the mind of our master designer.  The idea of huge mushrooms began to take shape.  And so began the journey to create the lights that showcased at the IDS Vancouver 2016 Show.

Our process began drafting ideas on AutoCAD inventor and AutoCAD drafting.  Preliminary sketches included a hammered copper dome.  Conscious of the heavy weight of the concept, the design eventually morphed into an aluminum composition.  The Gills in a mushroom are always a strong identifiable part of a mushroom.  The gills in a mushroom heavily influenced our final design for our Shroom Light.

Using thin gauge aluminum shapes, the mushroom gills, thirty in all, were cut on our OMAX waterjet machining center.  Specially designed tops and bottoms were created that would enable the gills to be mounted on to a center column.  The light is illuminated using energy efficent LEDs.

Once illuminated, the light becomes an interesting play of lighting.  The inner core of the fixture, glowing a warm color temperature casts and interesting play of shadows on the gills.  A down light is also incorporated into the design to provide functionally lighting.

Once product is completed, of course it needs to be photographed.  What better place to photograph this new light design, but at the IDS Vancouver 2016 Design Show.  Our in house resident photographer, Jordan, managed to capture the essence of these beauties with exceptional display.

GOOD ANIMAL and KARICE COLLABORATE ON CUSTOM LIGHTING

Good Animal, Karice Enterprises collaborate to create Custom Design Pendant Lights

In December 2014, Karice was approached by Vancouver Lighting Designer, Hesam Ghaemi to collaborate with him on a new custom lighting installation for the new Earls to be built at Mall Millennia in Orlando, Florida, USA.  Hesam had a new idea for custom design pendant lights.

Two lighting designs were quoted to Good Animal in February of 2015.  Only one of Hesam’s lighting designs was selected by the Earls Design Team to be used in their new project in Orlando.

Shortly thereafter, the project was awarded to Good Animal to build fifteen new custom designed pendant lights for the new location in Orlando.  Karice was contracted by Good Animal to further design and craft the pendant lights, and to bring Hesam’s vision to life.

DSC_0930

Karice immediately went to work to prepare the shop drawings for the project.  Round four shop drawings were approved by Earls in the fall of 2015.  In December, Karice began the process of drafting the mechanical construction drawings.  Production began shortly thereafter.

Fifteen custom design pendant luminaires were crafted by the team at Karice for the new project.  Design challenges included the sloped ceiling that the lights were to be mounted to.  An approximate angle was provided by architects.  Using this angle Karice designed a two piece canopy that was sloped as well as adjustable.  Site conditions are never what they seem, so  this was calculated into the design of the custom ceiling canopy.

Slight aesthetic design changes did occur along the way.  The back metal diffusers were originally black, and were changed to gold.  The height of the glass diffusers were modified, to suit the bulb that was eventually selected.  Everything had to be perfect for the new project, and perfect it was.  The final result was stunning.
