Portal Light A Design Collaboration

Collaborations vary enormously depending on their goals, settings, teams and resources. Yet all collaborations are a human activity, and the following six elements play an important role in all of them.

  1. Motivation
  2. Communication
  3. Diversity
  4. Sharing
  5. Support
  6. Problem Solving

When Karice was approached by Mark Kinsley of Lake + Wells, we were thrilled and excited to begin work on the Portal Lighting project.  Their request was for Karice to get help with the design engineering and prototyping of the new lighting concept.  The motivation for the project was the We Love Lamp that was a set for September 2018, as Portal was selected as a finalist in the 2018 competition.

Portal Lighting Concept for We Love Lamp 2018

Communication

Today’s technology with email and digital drawings,  the information about the Portal project was very clear.  The question was, how to bring the lighting concept to life.  This is where Karice, veteran lighting and product designer began the process of bring the Portal light project to life.

Design Process

Once presented with the design concept, the team at Karice went to working envisioning how the light could be built.  Numerous methods were analyzed, and much though went into designing the most cost efficient way to produce the light.  Brass with it’s popular appeal was the first choice of metal substrate for the project.  However, due to the expense of this material, and difficulty to process, it was decided to proceed with an aluminum substrate.  A solid billet aluminum T6061 material was selected for the Project.

The first process was to cut the profile to shape using our Omax 80160 water jet machining center.  Further processing involved the use of a CNC milling machining to refine the finishing details.  An anodized light gold finish was selected to mimic brass.  The Center panel of the light is genuine mirror polished brass for the reflectivity of a mirror.

Illumination Technology

Perfect for creating illumination even in the most diverse designs, LED technology was the only choice for this project.    The light gives  an indirect glow.  To avoid the appearance of bright hot spots, a frosted acrylic diffuser was selected  to hide the LEDs from view.

Lighting is a major component of any functional office space. A properly lit work environment offers up a host of benefits, from reducing eye strain and improving employee wellbeing to boosting productivity and lowering energy consumption. But with so many options to choose from, finding the best lighting solution for your office can be tricky. To help cut through the confusion, our Canadian lighting manufacturers have put together some handy tips on how to bring the best lighting into your workplace.

Ambient lighting

Ambient lighting is key for adding warmth and style to your office. Whether you have lamps, installed fixtures, or recessed lighting, you’ll want to make sure the light is just the right amount. Too much or too little light will not only cause headaches but also result in eye strain.

lighting design vancouver, lighting in vancouver, lighting vancouver, modern lightingTrack Lighting

Track lighting is booming in popularity these days—and for a host of illuminating reasons. Upping the design flair to offices everywhere, track lighting has a ton going for it. For instance, they come in a wide range of styles, provide versatility in use, work as task lighting, save space, and are easy to install and configure.

Lamps

Perfect for creating an inclusive work environment, lamps provide an intimate gathering place for meetings or social opportunities. If you are looking for a way to boost concentration and team build, lamps make great, warm-glow lighting options for your workspace.

Task lighting

Overhead fluorescent lighting can cause a wide range of health issues, from hyperactivity to sleeping problems. Task lighting, however, shines directed light on your work, keeping the glare away from your eyes. To ensure your employees are happy and healthy, switch to task lighting with low-glare bulbs.

Dimmable lighting

Going with dimmable lighting allows you to control how little or how much light you need at any given time. Regulating the amount of light will also translate into lower energy consumption—and that’s good news for your operating expenses and your wallet. For more savings, consider installing timers or sensors in your workplace.

Lighting Installed – Customized for this Home

Working directly with the builder with V Plus Illumination Design, it was decided to install three fixtures from Karice’s comprehensive lighting collection.  As fitting for this custom luxury home, the fixtures were customized specifically for this master piece home.

Entrance – Linked Luxennea with unique details

Our Linked Luxennea Chandelier was chosen for the front entrance.  Custom details were a must for the location.  The size of the light was modified to fit the space.  Typically sold as linked 5ft diameter luxennea lights, for this project, the size was changed to two 4ft diameter luxennea lights.  The direction of the lighting was also customized.  The lighting direction here is pointing down versus pointing in.  A custom gun metal color was selected to finish both the entrance and living room lighting pieces.  For the Living Room, a custom sized Diamond Luxennea Series 2 LED light was chosen.

Cascading Chandelier over three floors

A unique custom 15 light installation using our Electron Pendants was created in the staircase.  V Plus Illumination decided on how the fifteen lights would be suspended to create the best display of lights for the location.  The end result is spectacular.

Sneak Peak to Da Vinci
Da Vinci Collection – Inspired by the Renaissance Man
Da Vinci Collection – Inspired by the Renaissance Man 900 549 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Da Vinci Collection – Inspired by the Renaissance Man.

Da Vinci Collection – Inspired by the Renaissance Man.

The Da Vinci Collection is inspired by one question: if Leonardo, the great Renaissancian, were alive today, how would he incorporate 21st Century technology into his designs?  Over the last ten months, this has been Karice’s inspiration and guide in creating this handcrafted luminaire series.

Luxury Home and Design Show – 2018

At the 2018 Luxury Home & Design Show, the Italian Renaissance is re-envisioned,  and when it came time to look for our inspiration, the choice was simple – Leonardo Da Vinci.  For Maurice Dery, co-founder and lead designer at Karice Lighting, the mission quickly became clear: to make use of mechanisms produced by Da Vinci to play with light, to make light move many different directions.  The team at Karice has created especially for the show a fixture that uses a pulley, combined with mirrors and magnifying glass, to create a dynamic play of light.

Booth Display – Partner with Kalu Interiors

Karice has worked with KALUInteriors to create this space, reminiscent of Da Vinci’s study.  It combines old and new elements.  For example, its brass components have an Old World feel, but, innovation is represented in new materials, such as the Mirror Flex Wall Coverings provided by ODYSSEY Wallcoverings.  The central chandelier, created by Karice, is the primary light source; using magnifiers, it bounces light throughout the space to compliment the reflective gold wall coverings, the extravagant porcelain slabs provided by LAMINAM Stone Tile, and the beautiful authentic antiques provided by SCOTT LANDON ANTIQUES.

We are so thankful to our Sponsors

We would not be able to do this display without the help of our many LHDS sponsors.  Special thanks to Kalu Interiors, Best Builders Ltd., Diffusion Lighting, Laminam Stone Tile, Mirian Aroeste, Odyssey Wallcoverings, Project X and Tall Tree Construction.

Here we are on BC Highway 7 East, somewhere between Mission and Harrison Mills. … Within several minutes you reach a small but picturesque Elbow Lake.  This is the site we chose to film our Electron Pendants.

What are we crazy?  Who dips their light into the lake?

Electron Pendants submerged in Elbow Lake.  Just for fun you say.  Why not?  The day was sunny and warm, and we wanted to experiment with our light, filming and photographing in the great outdoors.  Super Natural BC, what better setting to photograph and film your lighting products.

Numerous Videos are Shot

We filmed our light over top of the lake, in the lake, and even used our DJI Mavic Drone to get an awesome arial view of our light over top of Elbow Lake.  Check out this video clip HERE

We even have footage inside the lake

Using a waterproof video camera, our electron was filmed under water.  Just for fun!

Lighting, Art + Science will be held on June 12 + June 14, 2018 at the Parq Vancouver + Hotel Grand Pacific respectively

Seminar A: Light and Shadow. Sustainable Lighting for Urban Landscapes

This seminar will highlight how “Energy”, presented here as -shadows and light – played a key role during ancestral societies, in our present day, and will keep doing so in the future. Elias will talk about creating a Space within a Space, using light. Our privacy, the connectivity, speed of mobility and handling the big data are some of the issues that are being analyzed in order to achieve a human centric lighting design for urban and public spaces.

Seminar B: Making an Emotional Connection with Lighting

Light is used in a variety of applications and the important subject is PEOPLE. Colour preference is about people and applications. Discover how lighting design and light contributes to enhancing experiences. The effects of light sources on and below the black body locus will be discussed and how it affects perception and enhances colour appearance in a variety of applications. Explore how you want people to feel comfortable, attractive, confident, and good about themselves. An in-depth study on the cosmetic industry will also be explored.

Seminar C: The Science and Application of Circadian Lighting

With growing emphasis on healthy built environments, circadian lighting is a popular topic that many designers and end-users are being asked to explore. This lecture will outline the science behind circadian lighting, telling an easy-to-understand story that helps explain what we should expect from circadian lighting, as well as address important design considerations, who should expect to benefit from circadian lighting and what those benefits are.

Seminar D: The art + science of visual communcaiton

When one hears the term ‘digital signage,’ the first thing that comes to mind is the technology – or, more specifically, the hardware behind such mainstream applications as menu boards and video walls. Technology, however, is just the means to an experience, not an experience. In this seminar, we will discuss how to create out of the box experiences and to look ahead at technology as a way to tell your clients story.

Unique Lighting Design
Unique Lighting Design for JJ Bean Cafe – UBC Campus
Unique Lighting Design for JJ Bean Cafe – UBC Campus 1024 768 Karice Lighting - Custom Lighting Vancouver

Karice is always thrilled to be able to work on projects requiring Unique Lighting Design.  From concept to reality this is what we do every day.  Fueled by passion to create unique lighting designs our team can’t wait to get started on the next project. LED illumination has opened up the door to lighting design, it is the way of the future.

Unique Lighting Design created for the new JJ Bean Cafe – Iconic plus two elements of discovery.

In  January 2017, Karice was approached by Dialog Design to help them with the lighting design for the new proposed JJ Bean cafe on the UBC campus, set to open in the summer of 2017.  We were presented with a challenge to design a lighting installation for the new cafe that would create an element of discovery.  They needed the light to be unique to the space and  iconic

Our team went to work.  We love the idea of simplistic architectural lighting and random architectonic shapes.  Using LED lighting channels, we created a lighting concept  that changes depending on the viewing angle.  We were able to create a piece that was not only iconic, but included not one, but TWO elements of discovery.

These “elements of discovery” have to be seen to be believed.  Viewing the installation from below on the ground floor reveals “U-B-C” while observing the same installation straight-on from the second-floor spells “J-J-B” (initials of the cafe).

This iconic piece was custom developed for the UBC location, which opened in September of 2017.

The cafe at UBC is the first of the chain to open on a University campus.  The size and shape of the building is long  and narrow, with plenty of nooks requiring creative lighting solutions.

Undaunted by the challenging architecture, the lighting designers on this project designed the concept in January 2017.  It was approved in April and the team built the custom piece, as well as other custom lighting in this location, in May and June of 2017.

So unique, visiting the cafe on the UBC campus to view the lighting alone is a worthy endeavor.

Dimensions, materials used to create this Masterpiece

This lighting feature in the Cafe at the UBC campus in Vancouver, BC consists of nine linear LED lighting fixtures.  These fixtures are individual shapes that make up the random shape of the lighting installation featured here.  The random placement of the nine linear lights is intentional.  From every viewing angle the installation appears random.  However, when viewed in specific locations, the elements of discovery in this unique lighting installation miraculously appear.

The lights are arranged in three sections.  Section 1 is “U”, section 2 is “B” and section 3 is “C”.  The linear shapes are cut and welded using a custom proprietary 3″ x 3″ aluminum extrusion.  The overall size of this installation is approximately 13 ft W x 6 ft D x 5 ft H.  A frosted clear cast acrylic diffuser eliminates the hot spots, but offers the maximum illumination and lumen output.

Suspended by aircraft cables, the lights appear to float, creating this unique, intriguing lighting installation on the UBC Campus.

Custom Linear Lights – Tractor Foods Custom lighting design for their West Broadway location in Vancouver, BC.  – Dave Wong of WHG and Karice Enterprises collaborate a third time to provide custom lighting for Tractor Foods at their newest location on West Broadway.

Custom Linear Lights created for Tractor Foods on West Broadway

In the winter of 2017 Dave Wong came to Karice with the lighting concept for the Tractor West Broadway location.  Dave liked our new RETTA linear light, but wanted something with an even simpler design.

Using the same basic idea and technology developed in our Retta light, a newly designed minimal end cap was used for the lighting installation at Tractor’s new location set to open in 2018.   The installation  was crafted by Karice using our in-house, proprietary aluminum lighting extrusion.    Once again we used extra bright LEDs, which provide lighting that would illuminate the entire restaurant.

Eight new linear lights are Suspended on the Ceiling

Eight new linear lights were made for the restaurant location.  When it came to suspending the light in the restaurant, Dave wanted a minimalist approach.  Using a custom Z bracket attachment and ceiling canopy, the suspension methods were mounted directly to the concrete ceiling.  The light was suspended by aircraft cable, with differing heights to have the lights suspended at varying angles.
