Collaborations vary enormously depending on their goals, settings, teams and resources. Yet all collaborations are a human activity, and the following six elements play an important role in all of them.
- Motivation
- Communication
- Diversity
- Sharing
- Support
- Problem Solving
When Karice was approached by Mark Kinsley of Lake + Wells, we were thrilled and excited to begin work on the Portal Lighting project. Their request was for Karice to get help with the design engineering and prototyping of the new lighting concept. The motivation for the project was the We Love Lamp that was a set for September 2018, as Portal was selected as a finalist in the 2018 competition.

Communication
Today’s technology with email and digital drawings, the information about the Portal project was very clear. The question was, how to bring the lighting concept to life. This is where Karice, veteran lighting and product designer began the process of bring the Portal light project to life.
Design Process
Once presented with the design concept, the team at Karice went to working envisioning how the light could be built. Numerous methods were analyzed, and much though went into designing the most cost efficient way to produce the light. Brass with it’s popular appeal was the first choice of metal substrate for the project. However, due to the expense of this material, and difficulty to process, it was decided to proceed with an aluminum substrate. A solid billet aluminum T6061 material was selected for the Project.
The first process was to cut the profile to shape using our Omax 80160 water jet machining center. Further processing involved the use of a CNC milling machining to refine the finishing details. An anodized light gold finish was selected to mimic brass. The Center panel of the light is genuine mirror polished brass for the reflectivity of a mirror.
Illumination Technology
Perfect for creating illumination even in the most diverse designs, LED technology was the only choice for this project. The light gives an indirect glow. To avoid the appearance of bright hot spots, a frosted acrylic diffuser was selected to hide the LEDs from view.
